Music Fundamentals

Colleges and universities make different assumptions regarding the ability level of their incoming music majors. Some schools expect the entering freshman to possess a thorough grounding in music fundamentals before enrolling in theory, while others spend much of the first semester teaching and reviewing music fundamentals. It is not uncommon for an institution to require entering freshman to either enroll in a music fundamentals class or demonstrate proficiency on an entrance exam.

Your success in music theory will depend on your understanding of music fundamentals. Indeed, students who are weak in their fundamentals will inevitably earn poor grades in the succeeding semesters.
